What type of weapon is it: A Hammer.

Who gave it to you: The Hammer Bros.

Long or short ranged attacks: Short.

History: Mario and Luigi were both exploring dry dry desert trying to find Peach when there was a giant rock in the way they needed something to break down the wall so they went to the nearest town and found the hammer bros to make them hammers to break the boulder.
